HD Licensing Fee Increases To $25,000 Per Main Station
(July 1, 2008) Although Ibiquity Digital continues to waive its conversion requirements, they have followed through on the initial license fee increase that sees the fee jump from $15,000 to $25,000. The fee is a one-time levy and the licensing term continues in perpetuity, but nonetheless- the cost of going HD Radio just jumped an additional 66% for the privilege to broadcast in a mode that has yet to stimulate much interest for the consumer. 3% of revenue fees for secondary channels carry a $1,000 minimum per year. In many markets, it’s difficult to find a station that is billing enough to justify the $1,000 as anything close to the 3% basis. Certainly, many broadcast groups have made significant efforts to promote the public’s hoped-for transition to HD Radio, but it will be a long haul before there are enough receivers in most markets to justify the fees. One broadcaster said the increase comes at a bad time for radio broadcasters to fund a solution for which a problem simply didn’t exist.
